What is the Lunar Calendar and the Lunar Cycle?
Hello Gardeners!
It is essential to understand how the lunar calendar works in order to use it. The lunar calendar indicates the phase of the moon in which we are at a given moment. The main purpose of the lunar calendar is to be used for agricultural or gardening purposes. One can plant according to the different phases of the moon.
So, the lunar calendar is a guide to planting, sowing and harvesting in relation to the position of the Moon.
What is the lunar cycle?
It is the different phases that the Moon goes through on its path. The phases are as follows:
- New Moon
- The first crescent Moon
- The first quarter Moon
- The waxing Gibbous Moon
- Full Moon
- Waning Gibbous Moon
- Last Quarter Moon
- The Last Crescent Moon
The lunar cycle begins when the Moon disappears in the sky, the moment when it is not visible to the naked eye.
How long does a lunation last?
A lunation always lasts the same amount of time and follows the same phases: from one new moon to the next. It goes through the same increasing and decreasing phases. Everything is indicated in the lunar calendar. The average length of each lunar cycle is about 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes and 2.9 seconds, although this period, also called the synodic period of the moon, is often shortened to 29.5 days.
